Philip’s 1986 Toyota Corolla

Published by Lan on

I remember when I first came across the coveted “Hachi-Roku” (ハチロク) and thought how easy it’d be to get one since they were so “old.”

Then I started seeing the street prices for them.

When I would take a look at the car, it was not worth (to me) the price the seller was asking for. The “best” one I came across was an faded red 84, rust everywhere, half an interior, 205k miles and the guy wanted (in my opinion) an insane amount for it.

I hardly found anything when I was actively looking for one.

Philip on the other hand was not me… he’s owned more of these Corollas than the total amount of cars I’ve owned I think… This is one of his beauties.

I commend on the hard work and dedication people put into their cars and Phil is no exception. A lot of the work put into this was done by the man himself out of his own garage at home. Check out the pics below to see why this took home Best Toyota at Wekfest Hawaii 2024.

I was feeling somewhat discouraged when we went out to take pictures. This particular Sunday was raining… and I mean raining. But as if the car gods could hear us, by the time we got to the area, the rain had stopped, the sun come out to dry, then decided to hide and peek behind some clouds every once in a while.

At the heart of it all is a 1.8L 2TG with ITBs. A sway different than “usual” swap silvertop from Initial D series. Check out those stacks!

Inside we have it made for the driver with a single Bride Low Max seat with a Vertex deep corn for control.

Peep the bar in the back. If what I remember, it was custom made.

Further, we have some water, oil, tach gauges for monitoring the heart.

The outside – like many other cars – is my favorite part. Though I’m partial to the hatchback model, this coupe hits pretty hard.

First order of business is the fitment. A set of 14×9 refinished Longchamps filling so well in the wheelwells. It is my favorite part of the car.

Second favorite is the exterior in general. JDM Kouki front and rear bumpers, some side skirts, and JBlood rear guards.

On the back side are the “must-do” Kouki redline taillights. I also noticed the oh so subtle roof and trunk spoiler to complete the rear end.

Had a lot of fun with this one! Wanna thank Phil for letting me live out my AE86 dream through him and taking me for a spin in it! Handles and moves very well considering how fitted everything is. Speaking of rear end, the 2 way LSD is so crazy sounding!
